Director's Notes
Known as the Master of Random and Dysfunction with his often absurd and outrageous comedies, Christopher Durang took a Tony Award for Best Play in 2013 for VANYA & SONIA & MASHA & SPIKE. While he professes a great love for Chekhov plays, in his "Notes from the author", Durang indicates that this is not based on a Chekhov play nor is it a parody of a Chekhov play. He says, "It's as if I took character and themes from Chekhov and put them in a blender", insisting that one does not need to even be familiar with Chekhov to be able to enjoy this play. Here we have middle-aged siblings, Vanya and Sonia, who share a home in Bucks County, PA., where they bicker and complain about their lives. Suddenly, their movie star sister Masha swoops in with her new boy toy, Spike. Old resentments flair up eventually leading to threats of selling the house. We, the cast and crew are delighted to have the opportunity to share this brilliantly funny and moving play with you. I am so grateful to the people who have worked so hard and have supported me on this journey: Kathy Lundy, Producer, Keith Deteau, AD & Stage Manager and our wonderful, generous and enormously talented cast. A huge thank you to Carl Mercier and team and Greg Brock for getting our set done so quickly. And another HUGE THANK YOU to Dave Anderson for allowing us rehearsal space at Victoria's Station. And, of course, a very special thank you to you, our audience for your continued support!
