Director’s Note
Brighton Beach Memoirs is the first of Neil Simon’s semi-autobiographical “Eugene Trilogy” (followed by Biloxi Blues and Broadway Bound). Throughout the 60s and 70s, Simon had established himself as a comedy writer for radio, TV, and Broadway with such hits as Barefoot in the Park, The Odd Couple, and Plaza Suite. With the trilogy, Simon turned to more serious material drawn from his own years of growing up during the depression. The themes of Brighton Beach Memoirs are universal: jealousies between teenage siblings and adult sisters, struggles as family members try to work through attaining individual identities, and the day to day stresses of living as seven people in a small apartment while trying to figure out what the future holds for each one. We see all of these challenges through the eyes of an adolescent boy who has baseball, girls and the mysteries of sex on his mind. Above all, our time with the Jerome family reminds us that when love and humor are present in times of difficulty it is easier to prevail.
